Realistic Anime Eye Tutorial by polkadotpandas Realistic Anime Eye Tutorial by polkadotpandas

This tutorial requested by :iconlunarosedragon: is part of a series that makes a whole realistic anime face. I felt like I should make a seperate tutorial on eyes because in my opinion they are the most important thing to be able to draw on a face. Here is the description of each individual step:

1. Draw out the outline of the eye you are wanting to make. If you are having trouble figuring out the shape of the eye look at real life eyes and make judgements from that. You also should draw in an upper eye crease at this point and if you would like the eyebrows.

2. Here you will need to use the first eye that you drew and create one identical to it. This may take some time but if you keep working at it you will get it. (Tip: holding the picture you are drawing up to a mirror is a useful way to find mistakes from a new view point) First go back over your outline with a thicker darker line. Then, you need to draw in the pupil of the eye and color it in. But before, you might want to add a "white spot" towards the edge of the pupil. This "white spot's" posititon depends on the position of the light on the persons face and creates for a more "lively" look. Now shade from the top of the iris down going from darker to lighter. This creates a shadow effect on the eye.

3. Now to add depth, add tiny slash marks to the inside edge of the iris as well as the outside edge of the pupil. This makes the eye seem more life like. You may also want to add the tear ducts.

4. Add the eyelashes. This just takes practice but a good rule of the thumb is to know the directions the eyelashes fall. Study the position of eyelashes on real life eyes to get a better understanding of this. Next add all the shading on the eye. The shading includes on top of the crease and inside the white part of the eye on the upper lash line. You then finish by drawing in the details on the eyebrows and your done!

This is just my way of doing my style of realistic anime eyes. Feel free to change it to create your own style.

My suggestion is do whatever style you think is the best method. Another suggestion I might add is to look at the eyes in animes that you like the most. Try to mimic their style and add a little twist of your style in it. If you want a more realistic style then study the eye itself and how it looks in real life. Hope this has helped :D If you have any other questions feel free to ask!
